The goal is to create moments of wonder and inquiry that inspire students to ask questions, seek answers, and engage deeply with the subject matter. Engaging students' imaginations in learning can lead to a deeper understanding and retention of knowledge.
Curiosity is the kindling that fuels the fire of lifelong learning. To spark it, one must present students with stimuli that are both intriguing and unfamiliar. These can take the form of open-ended questions, puzzling scenarios, or novel objects placed strategically within the learning space. The aim is to elicit questions that the children feel compelled to answer, driving them to investigate and explore further. Sir Ken Robinson emphasises that schools should be places that encourage curiosity rather than compliance (Robinson, 2006).
The essence of education lies not in the mere transmission of knowledge but in the ability to provoke the minds of the young, igniting within them an intrinsic motivation to learn. Exposure to diverse role models can inspire students to engage in creative activities that lead to a state of flow, an optimal experience where individuals feel fully immersed and involved in the process of creation (Csikszentmihalyi, 1996).

Children are not given specific instructions but are encouraged to explore, manipulate and combine the materials in any way they see fit. Creative thinking emerges when students are presented with challenges that cannot be solved through rote learning; instead, they must draw upon their imagination, prior knowledge, and the courage to experiment.
Because a provocation does not limit the activity with language-dependent instructions, children who speak different languages can equally engage and demonstrate their understanding and creativity. It becomes a universal language of exploration and expression, where children share ideas and learn from one another through observation, imitation and experimentation, rather than through verbal explanation. In the evolving landscape of education, a carefully designed provocation can become far more than an attractive starting point. A provocation is an invitation into thinking. It slows children down, awakens curiosity, offers multiple entry points, and gives them something meaningful to respond to, question, touch, interpret, discuss, represent, or transform. A thoughtful provocation does not simply decorate the learning environment. It changes the atmosphere of learning.
Inquiry-based teaching begins with the belief that children are not passive receivers of information, but active constructors of meaning. This idea is deeply rooted in the work of philosophers and educational thinkers. In Émile, or On Education, Jean-Jacques Rousseau argued that education should cultivate children's natural tendencies and curiosity rather than rely only on direct instruction. His view of the child as naturally curious still speaks powerfully to inquiry-based classrooms today. A strong provocation honours this idea by creating conditions in which children feel compelled to ask, explore, test, and make sense of the world for themselves.
John Dewey later extended this thinking through his belief that learning grows from experience. For Dewey, education was not the transfer of fixed knowledge from teacher to student, but a journey of meaningful experiences through which learners build understanding. A provocation, when designed with care, creates precisely this kind of experience. It places children in contact with a question, object, image, story, material, problem, or contradiction that demands interpretation. It gives them a reason to think. This is why multimodal approaches are so important. Children do not all enter learning through the same door. Some children think first through language, others through drawing, movement, construction, sound, storytelling, gesture, touch, digital tools, or dramatic play. Loris Malaguzzi and the Reggio Emilia approach describe this beautifully through the idea of the "hundred languages of children", the belief that children express and construct understanding through many symbolic and expressive forms. A rich provocation honours these hundred languages. It allows a child to wonder with their hands, explain through materials, represent through drawing, speak through movement, or build meaning collaboratively with others.
A purposeful provocation should never be designed for one type of learner only. It should stimulate different ways of thinking. It may include visual material, natural objects, loose parts, artefacts, photographs, books, music, maps, digital media, mirrors, fabrics, light, sound, or unfamiliar objects. These different modes allow children to approach the same concept from different angles. In doing so, the teacher increases the likelihood that every child will find a point of connection. The provocation becomes inclusive not because it simplifies the learning, but because it offers many possible pathways into complexity.
Vygotsky's sociocultural theory also reminds us that children learn through interaction with others, with language, with cultural tools, and with the environment. Learning is not only individual; it is social. A provocation therefore becomes especially powerful when it encourages children to talk, negotiate, disagree, explain, build together, and borrow ideas from one another. The teacher's role is not to rush towards the answer, but to listen for children's theories and help them stretch their thinking.

A strong provocation should create a balance between beauty and possibility. It should be calm enough to invite attention, but open enough to invite interpretation. It should be carefully presented, but not so controlled that the child's thinking has nowhere to go. It should invite children to engage through language, drawing, movement, construction, dialogue, digital tools, sensory exploration, and symbolic representation. In this way, the provocation becomes a doorway into inquiry. Adopting this approach is not simply a pedagogical preference. It is a commitment to seeing children as capable thinkers. The IB Primary Years Programme similarly describes learners as agents of their own learning and partners in the learning process, with inquiry at the centre of how children build conceptual understanding. Purposeful provocations support this by giving children meaningful reasons to ask questions, make connections, and take ownership of the direction of learning.
As educators, our task is not to design learning spaces that show how creative we are. Our task is to design learning encounters that reveal how creative children can become. A provocation should not simply impress the adult eye. It should awaken the child's mind. It should whisper: look closer, ask more, try again, think differently. When we design provocations with care, we create the conditions for curiosity to surface quickly. We change the emotional tone of the classroom. We show children that their questions matter. We invite them to use many languages of expression. We help them see learning not as something delivered to them, but as something they can enter, shape, and transform.
A provocation can rapidly change children's attitudes towards learning because it positions them differently. Instead of waiting to be told what to do, children are invited to notice. Instead of completing a task, they begin investigating a possibility. Instead of searching for the teacher's answer, they begin forming their own questions. This shift matters. Curiosity-driven learning has been linked with stronger question-asking, longer exploration, and deeper learning progress. When children are given the right cues and conditions to express uncertainty, ask questions, and explore ideas, curiosity becomes not a personality trait reserved for some children, but a learning behaviour that can be cultivated.
A carefully thought-through provocation also supports cultural awareness and global-mindedness. When children encounter stories, objects, languages, images, music, artefacts, and perspectives from different communities, they begin to see culture as something living, layered, and meaningful. Multimodal provocations allow culture to be explored through more than text alone. A song, a photograph, a family object, a map, a piece of fabric, a child's home language, or a shared story can all become powerful entry points into identity, empathy, and connection.
